Fabiola Cabeza de Baca is known as a writer, historian, activist and educator. She received a degree in Home Economics from New Mexico State University in 1929 and served as an Extension agent for 30 years. Fabiola worked in many northern New Mexican counties and was instrumental in reaching Spanish-speaking audiences. She also learned Tewa and Towa to more effectively reach Indigenous audiences. Her cookbook, Historic Cookery, featured traditional foods of New Mexico and was distributed nationally. Throughout her career, she demonstrated a value of the multicultural influences found in New Mexico.

Criteria:
The Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Diversity in Extension award was created to recognize Extension faculty in the college of ACES who have demonstrated excellence in reaching diverse audiences, especially minority and/or underserved populations.
The nominee must demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Excellence in developing culturally meaningful Extension programs, with state or national recognition, for minority and and/or underserved audiences.
  • Excellence in teaching and implementing Extension programs or activities for minority and/or underserved audiences.
  • Excellence in documenting and reporting accomplishments and program impacts.
  • Outstanding Extension performance record.

Eligibility:
Faculty member in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences with at least a 50% Extension appointment and who has been employed for five consecutive years or more. (Administrators are not eligible)

Nominations:
Any client, alumnus, student, or NMSU employee may nominate an individual. Self-nominations are also accepted. Forward nomination to the Dean's office accompanied by a minimum of documentary evidence that will include:

  • A statement attesting to why the nominee should be considered for the award that includes a description of outreach efforts to minority and/or underserved audiences and documented program impacts. Statement should also include an explanation of how the nominee's work continues Fabiola's legacy of multicultural work.   • At least one supporting statement which can be from clientele, students, colleagues and/or supervisors.
